	Conceived in the mid-nineteenth century, the Staunton design symbolized the restraint of the Victorian age, but quickly gained popularity around the world for its practical and elegant uniformity.  By the early twentieth century, it had become the international standard by which other designs were measured.  In 1924, the World Chess Federation officially adopted this design for use in international competition.
